As a young multi-sport athlete, Jim enjoyed a successful competitive career both as an athlete in St. Catharines, Ontario and at the University of Western Ontario. His coaching career spanned over 40 years at the University of Western Ontario, M.I.T, Yale, Wesleyan (Canada’s National Team) and Hobart-William Smith Colleges. He served on the Board of Directors for the Coaching Association of Canada from 1981 to 1995 and was one of five members of Rowing’s international body, FISA, and Competitive Commission from 1981 to 1994 making presentations in various countries including Canada, USA, Czechoslovakia, England, Egypt, Israel, Japan, and Scotland.

He has authored two books, The Mind’s Eye: The Evolution of the Athletes’ Skills and Consciousness, published in 2009 and Hanlan’s Spirit: Training for Flow, released in December 2011. His third book, Beyond the Centaur: A lifetime of Searching for the Integral, is scheduled for release in early 2013. Over the past thirty years he has produced over 30 major coaching conferences for rowing, The Joy of Sculling Coaches Conference, both in Canada and the USA. In recent years he has promoted Integral Coaching as a theme for coaching rowing and it is slowly catching on.
